full term calves

Effect of Neosporosis on full term calves

In many cases of Neosporosis infection the heifer or cow will carry the calf to full term.

In the abscence of abortion the calves born to dams that are seropositive for N. caninum, may be affected as follows:

  • 80-95% are healthy but seropositive. These calves if kept as replacement heifers will maintain the infection within the herd.
  • A small percentage are healthy and seronegative.
  • Very rarely a seropositive calf exhibits a range of neurological abnormalities from mild limb dysfunctions to paralysis. These neurological symptoms are the result of the damage caused by the parasite in the nervous system of the calf.
