Control and Prevention of Neosporosis
There is no treatment available for Neosporosis in an infected animal. Control is by prevention of the transmission of the N. caninum parasites and the reduction of the abortion rate. This requires an integrated approach.
Steps to prevent the transmission of Neospora caninum
- Serology should be used to detect all chronically infected cows. Ideally serologically positive cows should be culled or at least their numbers reduced. Depending on the percentage of seropositive cows this may not be economically feasible.
- Offspring should be tested prior to colostrum intake. Wherever possible only seronegative heifers should be kept as replacements.
- Purchase only N. caninum negative heifers or cows.
- Embryo transfer from infected genetically valuable dams to seronegative recipient cows.
- Following any abortion all potentially infected materials should be removed.
- The risk of contamination of feed and water by the faeces of other animals should be minimized. Especially keep dogs away from feed and water supplies.
- Vaccination with Bovilis Neoguard has been shown to reduce abortions in healthy, pregnant cattle that are challenged with Neospora caninum. Read more Bovilis Neoguard.
- Control of rodents.
- There is no treatment available.
